Speaking Stones
By David Bliss
what tales they would tell,
of things in heaven,
and things in hell.
Listen my people
and please draw near,
we will say things
that you need to hear.
We speak for many
who are not here,
they took their place
in an unmarked bier.
Many still sleep
on some foreign shore.
Some were buried
on the jungle floor.
Some lay silent
in the briny deep,
never to be found,
but, alas, they sleep.
Some were so young
they hadn't started to shave,
still found themselves
in a shallow grave.
We in the Army
sure covered the ground,
with bullets and shells
bursting around.
We stormed the beaches
and mountains well,
General Patton would say
"We Gave Them Hell"!
We in the Navy
sure covered the sea.
Kept the shipping lanes
open and free.
Assisted the invasions
and put them ashore,
provided supplies,
and did much more.
We of the Marines
are Semper Fi,
ever-ready
to shout that cry.
From island to island
we stormed the beach.
Our mortal enemy,
always in reach.
We in the Air Corps
covered the skies.
Protected the troops,
and delivered supplies.
We dropped paratroopers
both night and day.
Shot down their planes.
What more could we say?
Let[']s not forget
the Ladies who served.
Then give them thanks,
It's well deserved.
This ends our tale
of World War II
and how our God
did pull us through.
This poem was written especially
for this World War II dedication
