Rutherford B. Hayes 1822, 1893 19th President of the United States. In 1879, things were different when the sitting President Rutherford B. Hayes and his friend General William Tecumseh Sherman stopped at the Junction Depot near Second and Nettleton Streets in Cameron. According to the Cameron Observer Newspaper on October 2, 1879, word had came by telegraph stating the President would be leaving St. Joseph at about 10:30 a.m. headed east on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. Although the train was not initially scheduled to stop at Cameron, several prominent citizens started to make preparations for the visit. Continued on back.,

The 1879 newspaper described it this way preparations were immediately made for giving them a suitable reception. The artillery, under the command of Capt. Ellis, was taken to the Junction; also the Cornet Band and a large number of our citizens repaired thither and after waiting three long hours the Presidential party arrived amid the booming of the cannon and were received by sweet strains of music from the band and by cheers from the hundreds of people assembled. The President, Mrs. Hayes and General Sherman appeared on the rear platform of their car and after two minutes hand-shaking and conversation the train pulled out and away they went.
