Allen Wiley and Russel Bigelow of the Lawrenceburg circuit. It became a station in 1825 after a reorganization, and early meetings were held in the courthouse, schoolhouse and the Presbyterian church. The Methodists built their own brick edifice here in 1837, then built Ruter Chapel at the same site in 1858, It was named after Rev. Calvin Washington Ruter (1794-1859), a Methodist circuit rider and a presiding elder of the early church who helped found Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University).
