Colonel Frank Borman led the first American astronauts to circle the moon, extending man's horizons into space as Commander of Apollo 8 in 1968. He had commanded Gemini 7 to the first rendezvous of spacecraft in orbit.

After his 1960 graduation from the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, he helped create the astronaut training curriculum offered by the school when it was renamed the Aerospace Research Pilot School in 1961. He remained there until selected for the astronaut program by NASA in 1962. He logged over 10,000 hours, including more than 5,000 in jets and 746 in space.

He earned his Air Force wings in 1951 and was a fighter pilot, an operational pilot and instructor, a test pilot and an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy. Retiring from the Air Force in 1970, Borman joined Eastern Airlines and was named Chairman of the Board in 1976.

Borman was presented with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the Tony Jannus Award, the Jimmy Doolittle Award, the De La Vaulx Medal, the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Award and the National Geographic Society Hubbard Medal as well as many other honorary degrees, awards and service decorations. He was inducted into the International Aerospace
