Stone & Thomas Department Store
The first Stone & Thomas Department store was originally called the "Bee Hive." The store opened its doors in Wheeling in 1847 on Market Street and would become West Virginia's largest independent retailer. The business was started by Jacob C. Thomas and Elijah J. Stone, prospering for well over 100 years. The chain was sold to the Elder-Beerman Stores in 1998.
