Inscription.
Frederic Remington's only large-scale commissioned bronze depicts a horse and rider racing to the brink of a precipice. A native New Yorker, Remington traveled throughout the Western United States during the 1880s and had great success as an illustrator of Western life.

The Fairmount Art Association commissioned Remington drove through Fairmount Park and selected this prominent rock ledge on Kelly Drive, after first posing a horseman on the site. Cowboy's model was Remington's friend, Charlie Trego, from Chester County, PA, who managed Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The unveiling ceremony was attended by thousands, including cowboys and Native Americans.
