Johan Brouwer
Delfshaven, 31 mei 1898 - Overveen, 1 juli 1943

(English translation:)

up close as a journalist, author/hispanologist Johan Brouwer was very aware of the threat of war in his own country. In 1941 he became professor of Spanish at the University of Amsterdam, after his predecessor was dismissed for being Jewish. The NSB then revealed Brouwer's controversial past. He had been involved in a bank robbery and murder in the 1920s and had served a prison sentence for this. He resigned from the university, joined the resistance and took part in, among other things, the well-known attack on the Amsterdam Population Register on March 27, 1943 in order to prevent the Nazis from obtaining the personal data of Jewish residents. Shortly afterwards, Brouwer and the others involved were arrested. In July of that year he was shot in the dunes near Overveen. After the war he was reburied at the memorial cemetery in Bloemendaal.
