Inscription.
"Dartmouth Chocolates and "Hanover Crackers” were made in the building which once stood on this site. Erected by George W. Smith to house his family business in 1871, portions of it were severely damaged by fire in 1884. Smith rebuilt the bakery immediately, attaching to it a three story addition. In 1888, factory produced 65,000 crackers day.

Bogle Brothers, the only wholesale jewelers to be found either New Hampshire or Vermont during the latter part of the nineteenth century, also occupied a portion of this building, as did for a brief period, the White River Paper Company.

Architect Louis Sheldon Newton was responsible for the 1904 renovations which appear on the accompanying photograph, and are thought to have been the last significant extension of the building. The structure was torn down in 1942, eight years after Smith and Son decided to close up shop.
