Inscription.
This building was erected by Joseph Mace in 1885 as a grist mill. Mr. Mace's business, and that of his successors, Tilden and Glover, failed. The two story brick building remained vacant for over five years before catching the eye of the Chicago based meat packing concern, Swift & Company.

Gustavus Franklin Swift began his midwestern operation in 1875 and was shipping his meat to east coast butchers within six years. The White River Junction branch of Swift & Company was one of 400 sites, located across four continents, owned by the international corporation in 1912. The meat wholesaler received refrigerated car loads of beef quarters weekly and remained a vital part of the local business community for over half a century.

Catamount Brewery, the first microbrewery in New England to produce bottle beer, began producing world class ales and lagers here in 1986.
