Johan Hendrik Kern 1867-1933
Hij was een hoogleraar in de Engelse taal- en letter- kunde en in het Sanskriet aan de Universiteit van Groningen. Na zijn promotie in Leiden in 1891, was hij werkzaam in het middelbaar onderwijs. Drie jaar later werd hij benoemd tot redacteur aan de Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant. In 1900 werd hem het vernoemde hoogleraarschap in Groningen aangeboden en vanaf 1904 doceerde hij in Groningen tevens Sanskriet. Deze taal staat ook bekend als Oud-Indisch en is de heilige schrijftaal voor onder andere het boeddhisme.
Johan Hendrik Kern was a professor of English language and literature and of Sanskrit at the University of Groningen. After his promotion in Leiden in 1891, he worked in secondary education. Three years later he was appointed editor of the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant. In 1900 he was offered the aforementioned professorship in Groningen, and from 1904 he also taught Sanskrit in Groningen. This language is also known as Old Indian and is the sacred written language for Buddhism, amongst others.
