Garden District in New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Francis Martin House
A.D. Stafford constructed this Italianate home in 1887 for Ontario native Francis Martin. Martin was a skilled mechanic who worked for several railroads including the St. Charles Street Railroad Company. He was also a successful merchant in the lumber and paint industries. His son, Frank Martin, operated a grocery store on Magazine Street. The house stayed in the Martin family until 1945, when it was purchased by sisters Ruth and Edith Heslin. In the 1950s and 1960s Edith ran a dance school in the former carriage house. In the 1990s Cedric and Pamela Martin worked with Waggonner & Ball architects to enlarge the home.. When purchased by Mare Behar and Jeff Sbisa in 2006 they performed long overdue upgrades and restoration. The home retains its original fine woodwork, elegant pocket doors, plaster ceiling medallions and ornate door hardware, maintaining its impressive interior.
