Inscription.
Builder Abraham Howell constructed this double-galleried residence for Kentuckian produce merchant Luther Wilson Stewart and his wife Susan in 1858. Originally the double gallery was in the Greek Revival style with simple wooden posts connected with cast iron railings. Interior detailing was of the finest quality with many of the original features surviving. Between 1868 and 1893, the house was the residence of two families: those of Irish-born Peter Dolan and the Christopher Chaffe family. In 1893, Bavarian Charles Simon acquired the property and added the Italianate side bays. The house accommodated 14 apartments from the 1920s until 1970 when the Goodyear family purchased and restored it to a single-family home. At that time, the second level façade gallery was reopened with fluted columns and an atypical wooden balustrade. In 1978, New Orleanians Dr. Kenneth Adatto and his wife Barbara Anne acquired and continued the restorations. Here they raised their three children, held many Mardi Gras parties, weddings and other family fêtes. The home is known for its expansive grounds and flowering gardens.
