Garden District in New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Puech Shakspeare Tessier House
Standing squarely on the historic dividing line between old Faubourgs Livandals and Lafayette, the house was built in 1896 on part of the 1840's estate of Francois D'Aquin. The distinctive woven wire fencing, wrapping the corner and extending down First Street, originally defined the old estate. The present mansion, with its spacious double gallery and gabled roofline, reflects the rising classic revival style of its time. Designed for the widow and heirs of Joseph A. Shakespeare, former mayor of New Orleans (1880-1882, 1888-1892), the house was built and occupied by the extended Puech Shakspeare Dymond family until 1934. Subsequent owners include the classical musician Pauline Trawick. In 1989, Carli and Frank Tessier purchased and renovated the house with emphasis on retaining its original character. Today, the Puech Shakspeare Tessier home is one of the most interesting in the Garden District with its restored interior, exterior gardens and pegged-trussed French lavoir.
