Garden District in New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Carter Chaffe House
Designed in 1879 by German-born architect William Fitzner a favored architect of the city's Gilded Age, this grand villa was constructed by builder Ferdinand Reusch for Virginia-born physician John Carter and his wife Letitia Todd. It displays a picturesque asymmetry and a lavish application of rich decorative details in the High Victorian Italianate style, including oversized brackets below the balustraded gallery and bold hood molding around the segmental arched windows. The grounds originally included a side garden on the site of today's 1126 Second Street. Subsequent owners included rice miller Frederick Ernst and his heirs, 1893- 1905, and Creole planter and cotton broker Edward Sarpy, 1893-1921. During the Great Depression, it was converted to a multi-family residence. David Blackshear Hamilton Chaffe, Jr. acquired the property in 1932 and until 2005, the Chaffe-Weese family resided here. In 2005, it was acquired by Andrew Ellender Stall and Susan Lane Stall and extensively renovated to return it to its original purpose and elegance as a single-family home.
