Garden District in New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Rogers Voorhies House
In 1867, Henrietta Wilson, wife of Col. Henry Wilson, purchased this property as a vacant lot. Formerly part of the Livaudais Plantation, 1771-1832, the tract had been planted with indigo. In 1868, the Wilsons built the current Greek Revival Italianate Transitional house, where they lived until 1884. This house has been home to seven families. The longest residing was the Michael Rogers family, 1893-1959. Five of the children lived here until their deaths, one of which was Dr. Myra Clare Rogers, a professor of Latin at Newcomb College. The last surviving sibling, James Rogers, donated the house in 1959 to Tulane University. The proceeds from the sale funded the Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel on the Tulane campus. Dr. Edward and June Norman lived here, 1965-1976, followed by Bart and Ann Loomis, 1976- 1983. In 1983, Drs. Terry and Rand Voorhies bought the house and restored and renovated it, enhancing the informal living areas and accentuating the lush gardens.
