Inscription.
New Orleans' famous red light district transformed dramatically when the city destroyed most of the Storyville buildings in the 1930s. The Iberville Housing Development was a white-only, low-rent public-housing development constructed in the 1940s. It consisted of 75 residential buildings and one administration building. During the 1960s, African Americans moved into the neighborhood as desegregation and white flight reshaped communities nationwide. Over the years, the City looked for ways to reorganize many of their housing developments. Many of these developments, including Iberville, were eventually altered or demolished.
New life was brought to the community when the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) received a Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhood Initiative Grant in 2011. They partnered with HRI Properties to transform the former Iberville Housing Development into Bienville Basin. Fifteen of the original three-story buildings and the administration building from the former Iberville Housing Development remain. Using new construction and designs, HANO revitalized the former housing development into the modern Bienville Basin.
