Valley Forge in Chester County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
2d Armored Division
The division was activated July 15, 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia. November 8, 1942 "Hell on Wheels" invaded French Northwest Africa. Eight months later the division earned a second bronze arrowhead for its assault landing in Sicily. June 9, 1944 the division landed on Omaha Beach and fought its way through Europe crossing the borders of France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. On July 4, 1945 its tankers became the first American troops to enter Berlin, thus fulfilling, their motto "Benning to Berlin."
This "Altar of Battles" constructed and dedicated July 31, 1981 by the 2d Armored Division Association and its Ladies Auxiliary stands in honor of the brave men who served with this unit.
