The M3, introduced in 1940, became the standard anti-tank gun of the United States Army during World War II. While its size allowed it to be easily pulled by a jeep, the continuing improvement of German tanks made the M3 obsolete by 1943 in the European theatre, where it was replaced by the 57mm M1. Japanese tanks were less developed, so the M3 remained in service there until the end of the war. This gun was transferred to the museum collection from Jennings Armory in 2013.
The 156th Infantry's Anti-Tank Company, LANG were issued M3 37mm Guns in 1941 for use during the Louisiana Maneuvers. Almost the entire US Army was issued this weapon by 1941.
