Originally intended as an anti-aircraft weapon, the M5 was the largest purely anti-tank gun built by the US during World War II. After the development of this weapon, the United States Army fielded rocket-propelled anti-tank devices for use by the infantry that curtailed the need for guns like the MS.
The M5 was used by all the M10 crews such as the 773 Tank Destroyer Battalion. Later in the war all the anti-tank/tank destroyer units trained on the M5 in Louisiana.
