Inscription. After viewing the valley on July 24, 1847, Brigham Young reportedly declared, "This is the right place." Scouting reports verified that there were enough natural resources to support a city, which was soon laid out with wide streets and ten-acre blocks. The heart of the city was to be the temple block. When the temple was finished in 1893, the population of Salt Lake City exceeded forty-five thousand.
