Considered one of the greatest Dutch legal philosophers of the twentieth century. Was, among other things, a professor at the University of Amsterdam. He was also a deputy justice of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and founder of the Amsterdams Lyceum and the Law School in Batavia, now Jakarta. Scholten was a man of faith and a conscientious lawyer, who spoke fiercely against the violations of law during the Second World War. After the war he took a seat in the Senate for the CHU, later to become the CDA. In early 1946 he became a member of the newly formed PvdA. A few months later he died on board the MS Delftdijk, en route with his wife to their daughter in Canada. The Paul Scholten Center for Jurisprudence, the research center of the Department of Legal Studies, is named after him at the UVA.
