South Park in South Park Township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Memorial to Joyce Kilmer
Soldier Poet
Killed in Action
near Ourcy, France
July 30·1918
[Bas relief bust]
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimagely lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
The design for this memorial was a gift to
Allegheny County from Major Henry Hornbostel
one of Pittsburgh's foremost architects, May 30, 1934.
Erected 1934 by Allegheny County Commission.
