Regarding The Cattle Bank Building. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The Cattle Bank Building is of historical significance because long before the railroad came through this area, large herds of cattle were raised on the prairies in the area and the growers marketed these by taking them overland to Indianapolis, Indiana1 or Chicago, Illinois. The coming of the Railroad promised an end to the cattle drives with quick easy shipment to Chicago, and accompanying banking and loan business.
The Cattle Bank was a branch facility of the first bank in Urbana, Illinois (Grand Prairie Bank),to provide facilities for the cattlemen in this area. It is the oldest remaining business building in the City of Champaign, Illinois.
