Cornelis van Vollenhoven (1874-1933)

Rechtsgeleerde en sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoeker. Was aan de Universiteit Leiden tot aan zijn dood hoogleraar rechtswetenschap in staatsrecht, bestuursrecht en adatrecht (ongeschreven volksrecht dat via overlevering is doorgegeven) van Nederlands-Indiλ. Aan deze universiteit, waarvan hij twee jaar rector magnificus was, is in 1978 naar hem het Van Vollenhoven Instituut opgericht. Dit instituut houdt zich bezig met onderwijs en onderzoek van recht, bestuur en samenleving. Van Vollenhoven schreef tal van artikelen over de staatshervorming van Nederlands-Indiλ en pleitte voor autonomie, wat hem op veel kritiek kwam te staan. Hij werd ook geprezen als vriend en leermeester. In 1932 ontving hij een eredoctoraat in de letteren van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

(English translation:)

Lawyer and social science researcher. Until his death he was professor of jurisprudence at Leiden University in constitutional law, administrative law, and adat law (unwritten folk law passed down through tradition of the Dutch East Indies). At this university, of which he was Rector Magnificus for two years, the Van Vollenhoven Institute was founded in his honor in 1978. This institute is engaged in education and research in law, governance and society. Van Vollenhoven wrote numerous articles about the state reform of the Dutch East Indies and argued for autonomy, which led to much criticism. He was also praised as a friend and teacher. In 1932 he received an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of Amsterdam.
