Inscription. Samuel Scott McCuistion was born August 12th, 1817 on the waters of Long Creek near Finley’s Gap in Jefferson County. He never married and died January 13th, 1893.

He inherited Davy Crockett’s first rifle from his father James who had bought it from Crockett in 1806. He was an active member of the Republican Party and member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

He at age 31 became Clerk of the Register (1848-1856) and later Clerk of the Circuit Court (1856-1874) for Jefferson County. As Clerk he was required to be head of the County Militia and responsible for drilling the local residents.

Davy Crockett’s rifle was in this home until Samuel McCuistion’s death in 1893. The rifle is currently owned by a descendant of the McCuistion Family and is on display at the Museum of East Tennessee History in Knoxville. (Marker Number 27.)
