Inscription.  
Spaarndam is een dorp en voormalige gemeente aan het Noorder Buiten Spaarne. Het is ontstaan rond een dam bij de monding van het Spaarne in het IJ. Graaf Floris V van Holland liet in 1285 deze dam aanleggen. Het plaatsje leefde van de tol bij deze dam en vooral ook van de visserij.

(English translation:)

Spaarndam is a village and former municipality at the Noorder Buiten (“northern outer”) Spaarne. It originated around a dam at the mouth of the Spaarne where it meets the the IJ. Count Floris V of Holland had this dam built in 1285. The town lived off the tolls collected at this dam as well as the fisheries, too.
