(English translation:)

He learned to paint in Amsterdam and made interesting compositions of large groups of people. His talent is evident in the huge militia pieces he made in the early 1640s. His Banquet of the Amsterdam Civic Guard in Celebration of the Peace of Mόnster was for a long time admired at least as much as Rembrandt's Night Watch. Until his death he was the leading portrait painter of the wealthy bourgeoisie of Amsterdam.
