Guetos

Europe, the Jewish Quarter, or the ghetto, was a traditional solution for isolating Jews during medieval times. They were usually located in the poorer neighborhoods of the large cities. In September 1939, the Nazis revived this idea in the German-occupied territories, but with a deadly intent. Jews living in small towns and villages were ordered to leave their homes and join larger populations of Jews in the cities. These areas were turned into sealed ghettos surrounded by barbed wire or walls; no one could leave. In 1940, the largest ghetto was established in Warsaw, where nearly half a million Jews were confined.

The ghettos were overcrowded and lacked basic electrical and sanitary infrastructure. Food was scarce and the Nazis employed brutal measures against those who left the ghetto seeking it. Starvation was widespread and ghetto residents succumbed to disease. Death was rampant. Soon, Jews were concerned with only the most basic needs - rescue of family members, obtaining food and sustaining the body.
