Regarding Ballard Mountain. The mountain once had the racist name: N-wordhead mountain. It is presumed the mountain was originally named after John Ballard, whose home no longer remains. Ballard was a former Kentucky slave who had won his freedom and moved to Los Angeles in 1859.
