Vincennes Township in Knox County, Indiana — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
A New Fort is Built
You will commence the necessary arrangements for erecting a stockade-work with a blockhouse and accommodations for the garrison, including a small store and a small magazine or powder house, which should be made of brick. The necessary glass, iron nails, and tools will be sent from Pittsburgh. – Secretary of War Henry Dearborn to Captain Cornelius Lyman, August 4, 1803
There is a tract of 85 acres on the bank of the Wabash four miles above Vincennes, a most elegant situation, with some log houses on it, whereon 20 soldiers and a lieutenant are now meditating with full leisure on tactics, as useful here as a fifth wheel to a wagon. – John Badollet to Albert Gallatin, January 1, 1806
During Vincennes' long history, a series of forts were built in the town: the French built Fort Vincennes in 1732, the British built Fort Sackville in 1777, and the US Army built Fort Knox I in 1787. In 1803, at a time of reduced Indian trouble, the decision was made to move the fort from Vincennes to this site three miles up the Wabash River. When no immediate danger threatened, the citizens preferred the soldiers removed from town. This lull in frontier warfare would soon end.
