1. Hamilton Field Aircraft Hangers Marker

Inscription. These 9 hangers are original 1930’s Captain Howard B. Nurse-designed structures, now renovated to house commercial activities. A variety of historic aircraft were housed here, including biplanes, early propeller-powered fighters and bombers, transports and later supersonic jet fighters and helicopters. The flight control tower can be seen on the east side (former runway side) of the middle hanger. USAF flight operations ceased here in 1975. Portions of this area are in the Hamilton Historic District.

Regarding Hamilton Field Aircraft Hangers. Hangers 1 and 2 are still utilized as hangers by the Coast Guard Pacific Strike Team.

cities were competing for the new location. A new base would bring jobs and money to the depression –strapped local economies.A number of factors were involved in the selection of Marin County as the new site for the base, including, the temperate weather, clear visibility and the fact that 937 acres, known then as Marin Meadows, was sold to the government for $1. The base was built in 3 years for 5 million dollars."

2. Hamilton Army Air Field Discontiguous Historic District. National Park Service

"Hamilton Army Airfield, in Novato, California, was built as a bombardment base and the headquarters for the 1st Wing of the Army Air Corps, one of only three bases established for this purpose nationally. The base was utilized for the defense of the western section of the country until 1940. Hamilton Field played a significant role during World War II in training and national defense by serving as an overseas staging area, acting as one of three major bases of the West Coast wing of the Air Transport Command's Pacific Division and for its role in the Operational Training Unit Program. Construction of Hamilton Airfield commenced on July 1, 1932, with the majority of first phase construction completed by 1935."
