Near this Spot in 1846 Orlando Smith Stonemason from the neighboring State of Connecticut, searching for Stone and superior Quality, discovered the hidden Deposit of Westerly Granite and founded here a Granite Industry.

On this Ground through the Years has been demonstrated the Skilled Craftsmanship of that Great Company of Men who wrought here the many noteworthy Memorials of Westerly Granite that stand forever though the Land.
