1. Dr. John Hope Marker
Inscription. An Augusta native, he earned the bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1894. President of the National Association of Teachers in Colored Schools, and Morehouse College for 25 years, he was the first African American to head that institution. In 1929, he became president of Atlanta University. Under his leadership it became the only accredited historically black institution in the deep South offering a master's degree. A national YMCA official, he served on its international committees. During World War I, he was a special secretary of the YMCA in France, supervising the welfare of black soldiers. He served on the board of directors of the NAACP and the National Urban League and he served as president of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, set up in 1932 to prepare an encyclopedia of the Negro. The posthumous award in 1935 of the Spingarn Medal, the NAACP's highest honor, attests to his remarkable leadership.
