This lot and surrounding corners of the intersection were platted for civic use in Beauforts 1711 town plan. A municipal market stood here while the arsenal, a courthouse and jail stood at the other corners.

Beaufort was chartered on January 17, 1711. It is the second-oldest town in South Carolina and was named for Henry Somerset, the second duke of Beaufort, a proprietor of Carolina from 1700 to 1714.
