Natchez in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Badin-Roque House
This historic house is the only surviving example of poteaux-en-terre (post in the ground) and bousillage architecture in Louisiana and features a single central chimney and dirt floors. This house is also the only one of five poteaux-en-terre and bousillage homes in the country and offers a first hand glance at Creole frontier life.
Originally a two-room structure with front and back galleries, owners of the Badin-Roque later partially enclosed the back porch with two cabinets (small rooms and a breezeway).
Carpenters used hand-hewn cypress posts, sand, clay and Spanish moss to construct the home. Builders used a mixture of mud and dried Spanish moss, commonly known as bousillage, as wall insulation. In the early 1980s, the St. Augustine Historical Society restored the structure and secured the building's spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
