LTC Ted Pylant, a Vietnam veteran, served 34 years in the Arkansas National Guard as a member of the 875th Engineer Battalion. He also served at the Arkansas National Guard Headquarters and at the Pentagon. The author of three military history books, Ted conceived the idea for a veterans monument to recognize the service and to honor the sacrifice of those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States, he chartered the Craighead County Veterans Monument Foundation in October 2000 with dedication ceremonies on Veterans Day 2001; this is a "living" monument with new bricks added each year. It incorporates several previous monuments: the World War Doughboy Statue (1920), the Spanish American War plaque (1940), and and the navy ship USS Arkansas Anchor (2004). This monument where you stand today could never have been built without the tireless energy selfless dedication, and exemplary leadership of Ted Pylant - a true American hero.
