Chiesa e convento di San Marco

Church and Convent of Saint Mark
Inscription.
The convent arose on the spot where since the 12th century there had stood a Vallombrosan monastery, which passed first to the Silvestrines and then to the Dominicans in 1435. Reconstruction of the complex by the architect Michelozzo began in 1437; the decoration of the walls occupied Fra Angelica and his assistants between 1439 and 1444. Inside, the aisle-less nave has a "Madonna and Saints" by Fra Bartolomeo (1509) and a "St Thomas Aquinas in prayer before the Crucifix" by Santi di Tito (1593). On the high altar is a "Crucifix" by Fra Angelico (1425-28). In the 15th century the convent was frequented by important personages such as Cosimo 'il Vecchio', St Antoninus, Fra Angelico and Savonarola.

San Marco is a religious complex in Florence, Italy. It comprises a church and a convent. The convent, which is now the Museo Nazionale di San Marco, has three claims to fame. During the 15th century it was home to two famous Dominicans, the painter Fra Angelico and the preacher Girolamo Savonarola. Furthermore, the church houses the tomb of Pico Della Mirandola, a Renaissance philosopher and the so called "Father of Humanism."(Submitted on July 11, 2023, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
