Inscription.

The name refers both to the dedication to St Margaret of Antioch and to the Cerchi family, who held the patronage of this little church from 1353, at first together with the Donati and the Adimari families, and then in the 17th century on their own. Recorded since 1032, the building was altered several times in later centuries. Inside, on the high altar there is an altarpiece with the "Madonna enthroned with St Lucy,

It is first recorded in 1032 and is said, contentiously, to have been the location of Dante's marriage to Gemma Donati in 1285 or 1290. It was certainly the Donati family's parish church and also contains several tombs of the Portinari family, to which Dante's great love Beatrice Portinari belonged, including Monna Tessa, her nursemaid.
