1. Foundation of the Mill Marker
Inscription. Henry Merrell, assistant agent for the Roswell Manufacturing Company, kept a journal describing his experiences in the town of Roswell from 1839 through 1845. In 1839, he made the following remark about the foundation of the mill:

Upon my arrival at the place I found the first factory building of brick completed according to drawings furnished by Mr. Rogers of Paterson, N.J. The superstructure had been erected with remarkable fidelity under the eye of Mr. B. King; unfortunately the foundation, which ad been laid by his father before his arrival, had proved to be insufficient to support so great a weight: the building was cracking and giving away. After due consultation it was agreed upon to adopt the bold measure of shoring up the brick building, three stories high, & removing the old foundation, so far as it was defective, to replace it with one of hewn granite.

A report of the Archeological Testing of the Location of the First Cotton Factory, prepared for the Roswell Historical Society in 1991 by Karen G. Wood of Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., includes this drawing of the site with a conjectured outline of the 1839 factory in relationship to existing features.
