Ponte Santa Trinita
⎯⎯⎯
Holy Trinity Bridge
The first bridge was built in 1252 and named after the Church of Santa Trinita nearby. Like all the historical bridges of Florence, it was rebuilt many times after the Arno's numerous floods. Following the terrible flood of 1557, Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned Bartolomeo Ammannati to undertake the construction of a new bridge, whose project might have been inspired by an idea of Michelangelo Buonarroti. Entirely covered with sandstone and decorated with commemorative epigraphs, it was considered the most elegant of the bridges, whose magnificence was worthy of the daily passages of the Grand Duke and his court. The statues at both ends of the bridge are of Giovanni Caccini (Autumn and Summer), Taddeo Landini (Winter), Pietro Francavilla (Spring). Destroyed by the Germans during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1958 exactly "com'era e dove'era" ("how it was and where it was").
Erected by Città Metropolitana di Firenze.
