Inscription.
Fossilized tree stumps found in the rock above coal seams are referred to as "kettle bottoms". When the coal is removed, kettle bottoms, similar to this one fall out into the mine entry. This fossil is approximately 300 million years old of the Pennsylvanian Age. It was found in the "No. 2 Gas" coal seam in Kanawha County near United, WV, in 1924. The mine was operated by Cabin Creek Consolidated Coal Company.
