1. Wall Street Exists Because of the Seaport Marker
Inscription. With trade comes money, and New York merchants created a robust financial infrastructure to power their enterprises. Banks, insurance companies, and stock and commodities exchanges all grew up within blocks of South Street and this waterfront, eventually forming the Financial District that anchors Lower Manhattan. The trade that began right here at South Street created the Wall Street that exists today as a world financial capital.
