Inscription.

The stately Victorian home of Edith & Harmon Holmes and accompanying double-story carriage house (seen in photos) was built on E. Middle Street in 1886. It housed the Holmes family, which founded Chelsea Milling Company and Jiffy Mixes, until 2011.

New owners restored the iconic residence, but the carriage house was beyond restoration. Before its demolition in 2019, the large central barn doors and the Holmes' cutter were donated to the Chelsea Area Historical Society.

The c. 1900 American Carriage Company cutter was built in Kalamazoo, MI, and most likely commissioned by Mr. Holmes. The Kalamazoo company produced carriages, sleighs, and cutters from 1890-1920.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, sleighs and cutters were the mode of horse-drawn transportation during the winter months. Though similar, the two designs served distinct purposes. Sleighs were large and accommodated entire families. Cutters were smaller and were more often used by individuals. Because occupants had to sit close and cozy, cutters were the preferred choice among courting couples, too.

Chelsea Area Historical Society would like to thank the Holmes and Baghdoian families for their generous contributions, which made this exhibit possible.
