Until the late 1990s, people drove their cars into the overlook. They followed a curving route and went through an opening in the northern wall.

Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers quarried local Platteville limestone to build this overlook in 1938. The view beckoned and people came. It became a gathering place. People drove their cars into the overlook. They watched the river, migrating birds, and propeller-driven airplanes take off and land. Across the Minnesota River, Wold-Chamberlain Field ushered in commercial air travel.

Today people still gather here and observe the world around them. Across the river, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport links Minnesota to the world. This site has changed over time, but some things are the same.

Explore the overlook. Reflect on the view. Notice the natural world and surrounding landscape.
