The Forks of Cheat Baptist Church
The Forks of Cheat Baptist Church, organized by the Rev. John Corbly on November 5, 1775 with 12 charter members, has the distinction of being the oldest church with continuous records west of the Alleghenies in what is now West Virginia. It derives its name from its location in the area between the fork of the Cheat and Monongahela Rivers, which has been known as the Forks of Cheat since the earliest settlements in the area. It is thought that Bishop Francis Asbury may have been at the church when he first visited this area on July 4, 1785 and preached at Cheat River. The church was originally adjacent to the Sunnyside Cemetery, but was moved to this site in 1832, and the present building was dedicated in 1884.
