1. Hotel del Sole Marker
Inscription. L'albergo Sole, fra i più antichi di Roma, è uno dei pochi superstiti fra quelli annoverati nel censimento alberghiero effettuato dal cavalier Rufini nel 1855. Le prime notizie si di esso risalgono ad una gabella del 1497, secondo cui nella locanda trovarono alloggio alcuni soldati giunti a Roma al seguito dell'imperatore Federico III. L'albergo del Sole si trova in una zona che fin dall'antichità brulicava di traffici, animata dal mercato che si svolgeva in piazza della Rotonda, dalle festività solenni promosse dalla Confraternita dei Virtuosi, che aveva sede al Pantheon, e dal passaggio dei pellegrini che copiosi giungevano nell'Urbe specialmente in occasione dei Giubilei: uno degli eventi che maggiormente richiamava, e richiama ancor oggi, visitatori da tutto il mondo. In coincidenza degli Anni Santi i pontefici promuovevano importanti lavori di costruzione, di restauro e di sistemazionę viaria, per mostrare Roma in tutta la sua magnificenza e per ascriverne il merito al proprio pontificato. In relazione ai grandi flussi di viaggiatori sorsero molte locande ed osterie, di cui le più antiche erano concentrate nella zona di Borgo e attorno al Tridente. Un polo alternativo a questo tipo di ricettività va individuato nella zona compresa fra la Minerva, il Pantheon, l'Argentina e Campo de' Fiori, a cui i turisti riservarono nel Medioevo una particolare predilezione poiché accanto alle locande si potevano trovare gli ambienti attrezzati per il ricovero della carrozza e dei cavalli. Alla fine del Quattrocento la piccola locanda, primo nucleo di quello che oggi risponde all'insegna di hotel Sole, era nota come Locanda del Montone, secondo un appellativo che mantenne fino ai primi del Seicento. di Gamera, Giovanni Bitonto (lo stesso che commissionò a Sebastiano del Piombo la celebre Pietà, oggi al Museo Civico di Viterbo), per divenire infine di pertinenza delle monache benedettine di clausura del vicino convento di S. Maria in Campo Marzio. Ma altri proprietari e gestori si susseguirono nel corso del tempo nell'albergo del Sole, tra gli ultimi va ricordata la famiglia amatriciana dei Muzzi, che ne assunse la gestione nel 1968. Successivamente lo storico albergo fu acquisito da una società che ne dispose il radicale restauro, affidandolo alla cura sapiente degli architetti dei Vivai del Sud, che ne hanno rivisitato ed esaltato con fantasia l'impronta cinquecentesca. Lo stabile, la cui parte più antica è riconoscibile nel blocco di destra (quello cioè in cui le finestre compaiono in posizione asimmetrica rispetto alle tre allineate sulla sinistra), è qualificato da un'armonica ed elegante facciata in laterizi, scandita da cornici marcapiano in travertino. negli angoli. L'ultimo piano era invece definito da un loggiato, testimoniato da stampe dell'epoca, oggi chiuso e sostituito da semplici finestre. L'albergo è passato alla storia per aver avut ospiti illustri, come attestano le lapidi marmoree sulla facciata, da Ludovico Ariosto, che vi dimorò ai primi del Cinquecento dopo essere giunto a Roma ad omaggiare papa Leone X, al misterioso alchimista Cagliostro, al secolo Giuseppe Balsamo, che vi sostò nel 1768. E proprio qui alloggiò Mascagni in occasione del suo soggiorno nella Capitale per la trionfale prima assoluta della Cavalleria Rusticana, tenutasi nel 1890 al Teatro dell'Opera.

3. The Hotel del Sole and Marker

Brotherhood of the Virtuosi, that had its seat at the Pantheon, and by the passage of pilgrims that came copious into the city especially on the occasion of Jubilees: one of the events that called visitors from the whole world. In coincidence of the Holy Years the pontiffs promoted important construction jobs, restorations and road set-up, in order to show the magnificence of Rome and to assume all the merit.
In connection with the great fluxes of travellers rose a lot of inns, the most ancient of them were assembled in the Borgo area and around the Trident. An alternative pole is located in the area enclosed among the Minerva, the Pantheon, Argentina and Campo de' Fiori, to which during the Middle Ages, tourists reserved a particular predilection since close to the inns the environments were equipped for the refuge of the carriages and horses. At the end of the 15th century the small inn, first nucleus of what is today the hotel Sole, was known as Inn of the Ram, a name maintained up to the first years of the 17th century. 4. The Pantheon and fountain are located next to the hotel
to the clergyman of Chamber native of Viterbo, Giovanni Bitonto (the same Bitonto that commissioned to Sebastiano del Piombo the famous Pietà, today on display at the Civic Museum of Viterbo), to finally become pertinence of the Benedictine nuns of seclusion of the near convent of S. Maria in Campo Marzio. But other owners and managers followed during the years in the hotel Sole, among the last ones the Muzzi family that assumed the management of the hotel in 1968. Subsequently the historical hotel was acquired by a society that operated a radical restoration, submitting it to the architects of the Vivai del Sud that have enhanced the 16th century imprint. The building, whose older part is recognisable in the right block (the one in which the windows are asymmetrical in comparison with the three lined up on the left), is qualified by a harmonical and elegant façade in tiles, articulated by Travertino marble stringcourse cornices. The central storeys are illuminated by windows defined by arched and centring supported cornices of clear 15th century matrix overhung by a beautiful rectilinear frame with umbones in the angles. The last floor was instead defined by a loggia, enriched with old prints of that period, which is today closed and replaced by simple windows. The hotel has passed to history because of the its illustrious guests, as the marmoreal headstones on the façade attest, from Ludovico Ariosto, that came to Rome to hail Pope Leon X and resided here during the first years of the 16th century, to the mysterious alchemist Cagliostro whose real name was Giuseppe Balsamo, that stopped here in 1768. Also Mascagni lodged here on the occasion of the triumphal premiere of the Cavalleria Rusticana, held in the Teatro dell'Opera in 1890.
