D’Hier À Aujourd’hui, Prestige et Rationalité

Les bâtiments de la Monnaie de Paris - le palais du bord de l'eau et la manufacture située à son arrière - sont venus remplacer les anciens hôtels particuliers de la famille de Conti.

Le grand hôtel de Conti se composait d'un ensemble de bâtiments disparates, héritage de constructions prestigieuses parmi lesquelles l'ancien hôtel de Nesles. A François Mansart (1598-1666), on devait le portail principal du grand hôtel, l'un des morceaux les plus admirés de l'architecture française, quil ouvrait sur l'actuelle place Condorcet.

Si Jacques-Denis Antoine chercha d'abord à conserver ces bâtiments, il se heurta vite aux impératifs de construction d'une manufacture fonctionnelle, dont l'agencement se devalt de limiter les mouvements de métaux précieux, tant par volonté de rationalisation que par souci de sécurité. La destruction des bâtiments préexistants permit une reconfiguration globale du périmètre urbain. Pour la première fois à cet emplacement, l'axe de la façade allait se développer le long du quai.

discret bâtiment, l'atelier central d'outillage et de gravure, complète aujourd'hui l'édifice. Sa façade, recouverte d'une fine membrane de cuivre, rappelle les plaques métalliques perforées dans le cadre de la fabrication monétaire.

From Yesterday to Today, Prestige and Rationality

The Monnaie de Paris buildings - the riverside palace and the factory behind it-have replaced the former private mansions of the Conti family.

The Grand Hôtel de Conti was a collection disparate buildings, a legacy of prestigious buildings including the old Hôtel de Nesles. François Mansart (1598-1666) was responsible for the main portal of the Grand Hotel, one of the most admired French architectural works, which opened on the current Place Condorcet.

If Jacques-Denis Antoine first sought to preserve these buildings, he soon encountered the need to build a rational manufacture with a layout that had to limit the movements of precious metals, both for the sake of rationalisation and for security. The demolition of the existing buildings allowed a global reconfiguration of the urban perimeter. For the first time at this location, the axis of the facade would follow the river bank.

Born from the Métamorphoses project, this discreet building, the central engraving and stamping workshop, now completes the complex. Its façade, covered

with a thin copper skin, recalls the perforated metal plates used to produce coins.

Los edificios de la Monnale de Paris -el palacio a orillas del río y la fábrica situada en su parte trasera- han sustituido a los antiguos palacetes de la familla Conti.

El Grand Hotel de Conti se componía de un conjunto de edificios variopintos, herencia de prestigiosas construcciones entre las que destaca la antigua residencia llamada Hôtel de Nesles. A François Mansart (1598-1666) le debemos el pórtico principal del palacete, uno de los fragmentos más admirados de la arquitectura francesa, con la entrada orientada a la actual plaza Condorcet.

Aunque en un primer momento Jacques-Denis Antoine intentó conservar estos edificios, rápidamente, se topó con los imperativos de construcción de una fábrica racional cuya disposición debía limitar los movimientos de los metales preciosos, tanto por voluntad de racionalización como por seguridad. La destrucción de los edificios preexistentes permitió una reconfiguración global del perimetro urbano. Por primera vez en este emplazamiento, el eje de la fachada seguiria la linea del rio.

El taller central de herramientas y grabado es una discreta construcción nacida del proyecto Métalmorphoses y en la actualidad, completa el edificio. Su
