1. Rural Heritage Museum Marker
Inscription. The Rural Heritage Museum facilitates the collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of artifacts relevant to the history and culture of the Southern Appalachian region. Through its program of changing exhibitions, the museum assists students, faculty members, and the general public in understanding rural heritage.

Built in 1918 and originally housing the college library and later, administrative offices for alumni, public information and development, the Montague Building was converted to the Rural Life Museum in 1979. Exhibitions were first compiled by university historian Richard Dillingham with assistance from the N.C. Dept. of Archives and History, with reclaimed natural materials. The facility was refurbished in 2012. The name was changed to Rural Heritage Museum in 2014.
