1. Norges Bank (Selskabet For Oslo Byes Vel).
Excerpt (in translation): Norges Bank moved into its second building at Bankplassen in 1906. Until then, the bank had been located at Bankplassen 3 since 1828. The new and significantly larger building was designed by architect Ingvar Magnus Olsen Hjort. The building was one of the country's most lavish and, even on an international scale, a rare example of integrated art and architecture. The granite facades have city coats of arms from the major Norwegian cities carved in stone, and the architect also designed parts of the furnishings. Both the exterior and furnishings are characterized by Art Nouveau, albeit somewhat subdued compared to contemporary buildings in Oslo . The Museum of Contemporary Art was housed in the building from 1999 to 2017.(Submitted on July 28, 2023.)
2. Flight of the Norwegian National Treasury (Wikipedia).
Excerpts: The Flight of the Norwegian National Treasury was the transfer of Norway's gold reserves to the United States via the United Kingdom, to avoid them falling into the hands of Nazi Germany.(Submitted on July 28, 2023.)
The gold was stored in the main vault of the Norges Bank's headquarters in Oslo. During the increasing tension of the 1930s, plans were made to make the gold more mobile. When the Second World War broke out, these plans were accelerated and the gold was packed into 818 crates of 40 kg, 685 crates of 25 kg and 39 barrels of gold coins, weighing 80 kg each: a total of 53 tons.
When news reached the government in the early hours of 9 April 1940 that the patrol boat Pol III had been attacked and that enemy ships were approaching Oslo, orders went out to evacuate the gold to the vault in Lillehammer. Forklifts from local businesses were used to load the gold onto 26 civilian lorries. The last lorries left Oslo hours before the Wehrmacht arrived.
