Quick Facts: Cornerstone laid 1894. - First sanitary drinking fountain - Model School

By the 1890s increased residential development resulted in the Hamilton Board of Education purchasing a portion of the former Crystal Palace Grounds for a school site on the west side of Sophia Street (Strathcona Avenue, 1917) between Lamoreaux and Florence Streets.

- Opened September 4, 1895 as Sophia Street School.
- Renamed Strathcona Model School in 1909.
- Rebuilt in 1984-1985, incorporating architectural features of the original building.

Strathcona was called the Model School due to its role as the practice teaching facility for the nearby Normal School. Strathcona continues to provide for the needs of its pupils, many of whom play in Victoria Park, enjoying the experience of living in Hamilton's valuable West End Heritage Community.
